Welcome!
I was raised in the north woods of Grand Portage, Minnesota, and graduated from Cook County High School in Grand Marais. I’m lucky to still call Grand Marais home, where I live with my wife and our two rescue mutts.
My early influences were a legendary recycler and tinkerer grandfather, a guitar-playing, carpenter dad, and a mom who scheduled us craft days as kids. Family gatherings were often full of guitar playing and sing-alongs. Luckily for me, that meant music and art were always around.
Those same influences taught me to be thrifty. I prioritize using recycled, reclaimed, and secondhand materials in my work. By supporting Randy Spry Art, you're also diverting materials from landfills.
I’ve worked in construction for years, so it was a natural progression to start with woodworking, whittling wizards, carving walking sticks, and more. All of that woodwork usually needed some paint. After watching Bob Ross for a while, I decided to try my hand at painting with acrylic, and I loved it.
In the last couple of years, I’ve merged a few of those passions to start building custom guitars, a newer way of creating art for me. After my step-daughter’s band needed a guitar player, my love for playing music was reignited.
Somewhere along the way, I realized that playing music and making art were inspiring for me, and I hope that sharing this can be inspiring for others.
